P-201 Maintenance Hangar & Apron Project | MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA
he P-201 Maintenance Hangar & Apron Project at MCAS Miramar was a $30 million design-build effort supporting the Navy’s next-generation F-35C aircraft operations. GTS provided geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and quality control services throughout the project, ensuring compliance with ACI, ASTM, and military specifications.
Project Scope & Geotechnical Needs
The project involved large-scale construction of both facilities and pavements, including:
- New maintenance hangar building with deep foundations
- Bridge abutments and retaining walls for site infrastructure
- 500,000-square-foot concrete apron supported by cement-treated subgrade and aggregate base
- 1,000,000-square-foot taxiway and apron expansion for F-35C operations
- Full integration of custom concrete, CTS, and CTAB mix designs to meet stringent military requirements
Our role as QC Manager, Engineer, and ACI Transportation Inspector was to verify compliance across all materials, foundations, and pavements.
Laboratory Testing & Verification
The scale and complexity of the project required extensive construction materials testing, including:
- Development and verification of custom concrete mix designs for high-load aprons
- Design studies and proportioning for cement-treated subgrade (CTS) and cement-treated aggregate base (CTAB)
- Laboratory and field testing for compressive and flexural strength, durability, and moisture-density performance
- Verification of concrete pavement placement for taxiways and aprons
- Quality control inspections during deep foundation construction, retaining walls, and bridge abutments
By combining laboratory verification with daily field inspections, GTS ensured materials performance and compliance with Navy design specifications.
Engineering Services & Deliverables
As part of our responsibilities, GTS delivered:
- Detailed geotechnical studies and laboratory results for all custom mix designs
- Recommendations for water-cement ratios, compaction standards, and curing requirements
- Field oversight for apron, taxiway, and subgrade placement
- Daily reports documenting construction materials testing results, QC inspections, and compliance
These deliverables provided contractors and Navy representatives with complete quality assurance documentation and actionable recommendations for construction sequencing.
Project Outcome
The P-201 Maintenance Hangar & Apron Project was successfully completed, providing MCAS Miramar with:
- A state-of-the-art maintenance facility for two F-35C aircraft
- Over 1.5 million square feet of new airfield concrete pavements
- Reliable cement-treated foundations for long-term structural performance
- Verified materials compliance and durability through GTS’s testing and engineering services
This project demonstrates GTS’s ability to support federal aviation and defense infrastructure projects with comprehensive geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing services.
