Phoenix Loop 101 Improvement Project

Phoenix Loop 101 Improvement Project | Phoenix, AZ

The Loop 101 Improvement Project in Phoenix was a $108 million infrastructure upgrade designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on one of the city’s busiest freeway corridors. GTS partnered with contractors and ADOT to provide geotechnical investigations, construction materials testing, and inspection services for bridge widening, ramp reconstruction, and pavement resurfacing.

Project Scope & Geotechnical Needs

The project widened Loop 101 by one general-purpose lane in each direction, requiring extensive engineering and materials support. Key scope elements included:

  • Bridge widening to accommodate increased traffic volumes
  • Interchange ramp modifications to improve traffic flow and safety
  • Frontage road reconstruction along the project corridor
  • Resurfacing the freeway with both new Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) and asphalt overlays

GTS’s role was to verify that subgrade soils, aggregates, and pavement materials met ADOT and ASTM standards for quality and performance.

Laboratory Testing & Verification

Our materials testing laboratory and field teams conducted a comprehensive testing program, including:

  • Soil compaction and density testing for roadway subgrades
  • Aggregate gradation and quality verification for base and sub-base layers
  • Concrete testing for new PCCP bridge decks and widened lanes
  • Asphalt testing for overlay performance, stability, and durability
  • Field inspections of paving operations to ensure compliance with specifications

Testing and inspection services provided real-time quality control, allowing construction teams to adjust quickly and maintain project schedules.

Engineering Services & Deliverables

In addition to laboratory verification, GTS provided:

  • Engineering recommendations for mix designs and compaction requirements
  • Daily reports documenting soil, asphalt, and concrete testing results
  • Quality assurance oversight during bridge deck pours and asphalt paving
  • Inspection support for interchange ramps and frontage road reconstruction

Our deliverables gave ADOT and contractors the confidence that all materials met safety, durability, and compliance requirements.

Project Outcome

The Loop 101 Improvement Project was completed successfully, providing Phoenix with:

  • Additional freeway capacity to improve daily traffic flow
  • Strong, durable PCCP and asphalt pavements designed for long-term performance
  • Safer, more efficient interchange ramps and frontage roads
  • Verified compliance with all ADOT, ASTM, and AASHTO standards

GTS’s expertise in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and inspection services played a vital role in delivering one of Phoenix’s most important highway improvement projects.
